All around was more than 50 million years of geological and volcanic activity with the 10+ layers of basalt breaking up the smooth rounded hills and the vibrant colors of the badlands showing through.

Watching the clouds blow through as we had the whole Painted Hills park to ourselves on a stormy day early this year. The streaks of color cutting through the rolling hills are definitely amazing to see in person!

View of our awesome campsite after I followed a game trail up a mountain along the John Day River as it snakes through the colored hillsides. There is just something unique about this area and everytime I go, I find more areas I want to explore. I just wish it weren't a 4 hour drive to get out there!

The 120ft waterfall and stream cuts through the 25 million year old basalt walls. The trail to this waterfall is amazing and goes right up the stream requiring wading up to above waist level depending on the water level.
